Hi everybody,

It's been a while.... we know - and we'll try to keep in touch a bit more regularly! The good news is that our absence here is due to the fact that our shop is thriving and needs a lot of attention.
A different kind of attention was brought to it lately by the London based blogger Tina Bernstein who discovered our shop and wrote a lovely post about it - and us. Karl is back in town

As you probably know, Karl Marx lived and died in London, where he is buried in Highgate cemetery. In honor of his 195th birthday on May 5th, the German concept artist Ottmar Hörl placed 500 statues of the philosopher in KARL MARX' hometown Trier in Germany.
We are proud to have brought Karl Marx back to London. You can now purchase the statues in 4 different shades of red in our shops and online.

The Marx family lived in an apartment in 28, Dean Street, Soho, from 1850 to 1856. From there it was only a short walk to the British Library. A memorial plaque, installed by the Greater London Council, commemorates this with the words: "Karl Marx, 1818–1883, lived here 1851–1856".

We are more than pleased to present a selection of beautiful, witty prints by the Danish artist Lene Bladbjerg in our shop now.

Lene was born in Denmark, but grew up in Brussels, Belgium and is now based in London where she graduated at London College for Printing in 2000.

Since then, she has been working from her studio in Crystal Palace, South London, as a full-time visual artist and freelance graphic designer.Lene Bladbjerg’s work is influenced by her background as a graphic designer.

Typography and grids drift in and out of her pieces creating haunting images and surprising messages. Her work can be very thought-provoking. She pays great attention to the smaller scale details of everyday life. In her work she attempts to capture the hidden beauty or interesting aspect of even the most ordinary of events or objects. She often creates her work by incorporating unusual materials, often re-cycled.

Alexandra Palace

Last weekend we headed over - or should I say up? - to the iconic North London venue, the huge Alexandra Palace, located on a hill surrounded by a park and offering fantastic views of the city. It is quite an impressive building and we were sad to see that unfortunately it is a bit derelict in parts. Luckily there are plans and efforts to regenerate the place over the next decade which would definitely be worth while! The potential is enormous... but see for yourself: below are a few photos we took inside the west wing.  This seems to be one of the parts in not too bad a state and gives you an idea of how beautiful the palace could be in general. We found its history and involvment with the BBC to be quite interesting too.

Well, then at least those of you who are in London or planning a visit here should not miss the wonderful exhibition of Man Ray's work at the National Portrait Gallery. We went yesterday evening and loved it! It's a lot to take in - a bit overwhelming nearly - due to the high number of photographs exhibited, and it is quite crowded, too, but nevertheless such a treat!
So, take time and enjoy portraits of the arty, intellectual, beautiful people Man Ray met during the first half of the last century!

Isn't it great that this cold, grey month of February, when everybody is yearning for the colours of spring, is brightened up in the middle by the celebration of Valentine's Day?!

Red roses and hearts greet us in nearly every shop window, patisseries offer delicious, beautifully pink and red decorated goodies, love messages on cards make us smile and people go searching for just the right gift for their loved ones. All this warms our hearts and makes life in winter a bit nicer.

The Spice Trader

We found fine organic spices for you in Toronto! Passing by this beautiful shop, the seducing scent coming through the door drew us inside. We entered a colourful and mouth watering world, met the charming owner Allison and instantly ordered her exquisit and beautifully designed products for our shop!

She has created various collections of herbs and spices with themes of different cuisines, such as a French Box, an Italian Box, the Around the World Box, the Herb Box and especially for the holiday baking season the Baker's Box including a vanilla extract that blows your mind!

This box contains the following organic herbs:

summer savory,marjoram,oregano,parsley,sage, tarragon, lemon thyme and thyme.

SUMMER SAVORY is a herb from the Mediterranean region. Its flavour is reminiscent of THYME with a hint of MARJORAM, and it is an essential ingredient in chicken stock. Its flavour does not overpower dishes but adds a particular dimension and so works well in blends, especially stuffing seasoning.

TARRAGON is an aromatic herb cultivated for its sweet, anise-like flavor. Tarragon imparts its flavour readily, and is one of the herbs often used in making flavoured vinegars and oils, not to mention mustard! It is grown in Europe and is found extensively in French cooking. It has a distinct flavour found in tartare and bernaise sauces and is one of the ingredients in HERBES DE PROVENCE.

MARJORAM is a herb that is native to Europe and is now grown all over the world. It is used in European and American cuisine. It is similar to Oregano and has some of the same flavour. However, it is more delicate and sweeter than oregano and is used in many blends such as BOUQUET GARNI andHERBES DE PROVENCE.

OREGANO is a herb native to the Mediterranean. It has a sharp, spicy flavour muted with a lingering lemony taste. It is used in Italian cuisine and is essential in ITALIAN MIXED HERBS. It is also found in American and Mexican cuisine.

PARSLEY is a herb that has been around for centuries. Dried parsley is mild and fresh in flavour. It is a flavour that helps enhance other flavours and is used in herb blends and to complement delicately tasting foods like white fish. It can be found in HERBES DE PROVENCE, BOUQUET GARNI, and ITALIAN MIXED HERBS.

SAGE is a herb from the Mediterranean region that has been used for centuries. It is a pungent herb that has a slight minty and musky tinge to it. It is used in traditional stuffing blends and is an essential ingredient in ITALIAN MIXED HERBS. Sage works well with fatty meats as its astringent flavour profile cuts through the grease. It is delicious when used to make savory breads.

THYME is native to the Mediterranean region. It has been used for centuries. It is found in many blends both spice and herb. It has a pungent, sweet, antiseptic flavour. It is always found in BOUQUET GARNI, HERBES DE PROVENCE, ITALIAN MIXED HERBS and ZA'TAR

 BLACK PEPPERCORNS are known in India as the King of Spices. Black pepper is produced from the green unripe berries of the pepper plant. The berries are cooked briefly in hot water, both to clean them and to prepare them for drying. The berries are dried in the sun or by machine for several days, during which time the fruit around the seed shrinks and darkens into a thin, wrinkled black layer around the seed. Once dried, the fruits are called black peppercorns. Try it on strawberries!
